Reasons for preference of luxury cosmetics in the U.S. 2018

When it comes to luxury cosmetics, they usually come at a higher price range than their conventional counterparts. These products lie at the highest end of the market in terms of price which means that shoppers have to spend heavily in their quest of a prestigious item. So, why do consumers in the United States prefer luxury cosmetics over regular items?

Quality is the single most important reason to prefer luxury cosmetics over conventional products according to 70 percent of consumers surveyed in the USA in 2018. Brand, scent, and effect were other common aspects that persuaded the respondents to go for luxury cosmetics in place of conventional makeup items.

Prestige beauty industry in the United States
United State is a thriving market for luxury cosmetics. The dollar sales of prestige beauty products rose to US$18.8 billion in 2019, an increase of more than 100 percent from 2010. A major chunk of this money was generated with the sales of luxury makeup items which included the likes of foundations, eye shadows and lipsticks. The biggest increase in prestige beauty sales growth in the U.S. could be observed in the premium hair care segment in 2019.

All these premium cosmetics were available at various locations including supermarkets, pharmacies and drugstores. However, as of 2018, most of the U.S. respondents preferred cosmetic stores for purchasing luxury cosmetics. Clinique was the most popular brand for luxury cosmetics among U.S. consumers surveyed in 2018, followed by Lancôme, Chanel and Estee Lauder.
