Terms of trade Net barter terms of trade are calculated as the percentage ratio of the export unit value to the import unit value, measured relative to the base year 2000. This index measures how many goods and services a country had to export to finance its imports. An increase would mean that the country benefited from improved terms of trade that allow it to purchase more import goods for the same amount of exports. Likewise, a decline would indicate a deterioration of terms of trade that would put pressure on the country to export more goods to sustain the level of imports.
