Accordingly, cereal crops that are harvested for hay; harvested green for food, feed, or silage; or used for grazing are excluded. When crops such as cabbages, pumpkins, and carrots are specifically cultivated for animal feed, they are also excluded. Crop data refers to crops grown in fields and/or truck farms, which are primarily intended for sale, thus excluding crops cultivated in kitchen gardens and/or small family gardens, which are primarily intended for domestic consumption.
Fruit (excluding melons) data refers to all fresh fruit products that are intended for direct consumption (i.e., food or feed) or are used in a variety of products, such as dry fruit, juice, jam, or alcohol. Data about products from scattered trees that are used mainly for domestic consumption is not usually collected.
Products from wild plants ─ particularly berries ─ are of some importance in certain countries but generally not considered by national statistical services. Nut products (including chestnuts) relate to nuts in the shell or in the husk. Statistics are limited and generally only refer to crops for sale. Nuts mainly used for flavoring beverages and oils are excluded.
