Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited NPAT FY 2015-2019

In fiscal year 2018, Fonterra announced their first ever financial loss. The following year, Fonterra reported an additional loss of 605 million New Zealand dollars. The largest company in New Zealand in terms of revenue, Fonterra has been facing financial challenges in recent years, exacerbated by legal issues and contamination scares.

Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited

Fonterra is New Zealand’s largest dairy cooperative and boasts some impressive figures. It is owned by 10,500 Kiwi farmers and is responsible for around 25 percent of New Zealand’s exports. In New Zealand, brands produced by the co-op include Anchor (milk), Mainland (cheese and butter), and Fresh 'n Fruity (yogurt). One of the largest producers of cow milk worldwide, Fonterra plays a significant role in the global context. The company exports 95 percent of their local production to around 140 countries worldwide. As fresh milk is perishable, exports are mainly in the form of milk powders.

Is there competition?

Fonterra is the most dominant dairy company in New Zealand, and one of the leading companies worldwide. Other major global dairy exporters, such as Lactalis and Saputo, are the co-op’s biggest competitors. Fonterra’s main competitors in New Zealand are Open Country Dairy Limited and Synlait Milk Limited. With Fonterra struggling to turn a profit recently, the co-op may struggle to maintain its dominance in the dairy sector both locally and globally.
