Glyphosate-related penalty payments made by Bayer in the US 2018-2021
In three glyphosate-related verdicts against Bayer in California in 2018 and 2019, the German company was supposed to pay around 2.4 billion U.S. dollars. However, the amount was reduced later due to several reasons, so that Bayer actually paid around 140 million U.S. dollars. In June 2020, Bayer agreed to a final payment of some 10 billion U.S. dollars to resolve most of remaining U.S. lawsuits as well as to adress potential future ones. One year later, in July 2021, the company announced to add another 4.5 billion for future claims. Furthermore, it said to be working on replacing glyphosate-based products starting in 2023 for U.S. residential customers. As of December 2022, there were still around 26,000-30,000 active glyphosate (Roundup) lawsuits to be settled.
