Population of Austria 1910-2020
This graphic shows the total population of Austria from 1910 until 2020. As we can see, the population drops between 1910 and 1923, when Austria's population was considerably depleted as a result of World War I. The First World War began on July 28, 1914, when the Austro-Hungarian Empire (with the support of the German Empire) declared war on Serbia in retaliation for the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand one month previously. Tensions had already been rising in the area as Serbia's ambitions in the Balkans were deemed a threat by Austrian leadership. The war would go on to be the largest conflict of its kind (until World War II), and approximately fifteen million people would perish as a direct result of the war.

Dissolution
The Austro-Hungarian Empire was dissolved after the war, and a vast empire that had once exceeded fifty million people was now just a country with 6.5 million in 1923. The population grew to 6.8 million in 1934, however Austria then became a part of Germany for the period surrounding the Second World War, and there are no statistics for this time. We can however see that the population grew by less that 0.2 million people between 1934 and 1950, which would suggest that World War II had a significant impact on the Austrian population.

Post-War growth
From 1950 onwards we can see that Austria enjoyed continuous growth until the 1980s when the population dipped, due to a reduction in the number of foreign workers coming to the country, and the legalization of abortion and greater access to contraception (there was also a period known as the 'pill-drop-off' in the 1960s, where the birth rate decreased dramatically). By the mid-1980s the population began to grow again, and is predicted to exceed 9 million people by 2020.
