The number of children adopted domestically in Spain amounted to 675 in 2021, according to the latest records. This figure has been fluctuating during the last few years, registering 770 domestic adoptions in 2013 and recording its lowest point in 2014 at 525 adoptions within Spain. Andalusia was the region that registered the highest number of domestic adoptions with 168 in 2021.
International vs. Domestic
The number of children adopted internationally in Spain was considerably lower than that of domestic adoptions, with 171 international adoptions registered in 2021. As of the same year, the Catalonia was the Spanish region that recorded a highest number of this type of adoptions with 50 in total. The latest records also reveal that most of the children were adopted in European countries.
Spaniards: very suitable adoptive parents
In 2021, Spain issued 459 certificates of suitability for international adoption, most of them in the autonomous community of Catalonia. However, the Mediterranean country has been issuing fewer of these certificates during the last few years, with 2013 recording the highest number of them at almost 2.3 thousand certificates of suitability.
