Cases of rabies in U.S. animals 2000-2017, by domestication

The rate of rabies in wild and domestic animals has followed specific patterns in recent years. From 2000 through 2017 a majority of recorded rabies cases have occurred in wild animals as opposed to domestic ones. As of 2017, there were 4,055 reported cases of rabies among wild animals and 399 reported cases among domestic animals. Prior to the 1960s there were more cases of rabies reported among domestic animals, the inverse of the patterns recorded today.
