Total fertility rate of Switzerland 1850-2020

The fertility rate of a country is the average number of children that women from that country will have throughout their reproductive years. In 1850, Switzerland's fertility rate was just above four children per woman, and it fluctuated between 3.4 and 4.1 over the next sixty years, before dropping to 1.8 in 1940. Between the early 1940s and late 1960s, Switzerland experienced its 'baby boom' (although it did decrease slightly in the 1950s), before dropping to 1.5 in 1980, and it has plateaued around this number until today.
