Legalization of cannabis for recreational and medicinal use in Canada and the U.S. has allowed big pharmaceutical companies to capitalize on the industry through cannabis patents and distribution. As of 2019, Abbvie had the largest number of patents among all cannabis patent holders in the United States. With 59 patents for cannabis they were far above even the second ranked company, Sanofi, which had 39 patents at that time.
