Number of NHS dentists in England 2008/09-2022/23

There were over 24 thousand dentists active within the NHS in England in the year 2022/23. Since 2008/09 the number of dentists has climbed steadily peaking at 26.7 thousand in 2019/20. The number of dentist is not expected to return to pre-pandemic levels due to loss of earnings, early retirement, and other reasons.

The source adds the following information: "To limit COVID-19 transmissions, dental practices were instructed to close and cease all routine dental care from the 25th March 2020, and began to reopen from 8th June 2020. The imposed restrictions impacted on dental earnings and expenses which may result in lower workforce numbers than expected from 2020/21. "
