Coffee consumption in China 2018-2024
Between 2022 and 2023, the Chinese population consumed around five million 60-kilogram bags of coffee. In comparison, coffee production volume in China amounted to around 1.8 million bags in the same period. Coffee consumption among Chinese consumers was expected to remain the same in the crop year 2023/24.
China’s coffee market
Instant coffee has long dominated the Chinese market; however, freshly ground coffee was expected to surpass instant coffee by 2023. In the past decade, cafés have sprouted all over China. Among the leading brands in China, Luckin Coffee had the largest number of cafés in operation as of 2023. A wide variety of coffees were available, with Cappuccino being among consumers' favorites as of May 2022.
The average Chinese coffee drinker
In China, coffee is increasingly popular among young people. Consumers aged between 25 and 44 formed the largest group of coffee drinkers. More than half of Chinese coffee drinkers consumed at least three cups a week.
