Approximately 13 thousand people in Hokkaido prefecture, Japan, reported that they live in Ainu communities in 2017. Due to the lack of demographic investigations into the population of Ainu people, the official total number of Ainu inhabitants of the prefecture, or the country, is yet unknown.
