Energy deficit India FY 2015-2018
The electricity shortage of over 8,500 million units was recorded across India in financial year 2018, which was an increase from the previous year. An overall decrease in the energy deficit was noted from fiscal year 2015 in the country.
The energy deficits presented by Central Electricity Authority are merely the theoretical difference between energy demanded and energy supplied by the companies which understates the actual deficit. The distribution companies' demand does not reflect the expected end-consumer demand as their electricity off-take depends on their ability to pay and many companies are financially stressed. Also, the electricity demand are not accounted for the households which are not connected to the grid. Basically, the relatively small deficits reported by CEA are largely derived from the congestion of the grid.
