Guatemala: public debt as share of GDP 2010-2018, by creditor type
Unlike many other Latin American countries, the debt that Guatemala's central government owed to foreign creditors in 2018 was 3.3 percentage points lower than the amount of debt held with creditors based in the country. In the period between 2010 and 2018, Guatemala's both internal and external debts in relation to the country's gross domestic product (GDP) have remained relatively stable. Whereas its debt to internal creditors slightly increased from 11 percent in 2010 to 14 percent in 2018, its debt to foreign creditors decreased from 13 to 10.7 percent in the same period.
