Turkey started the period (measured by Ipsos surveys conducted between December 2011 and June 2019) as the happiest of the selected countries, with 89 percent of happy respondents. However the number had dropped to 50 percent by 2019. The majority of other selected countries were also happier in 2011 compared to 2019, although the difference was not as big as for Turkey. Hungary is the only country that increased the level of happiness of its residents in 2019 versus 2011, but only by seven percentage points.

* This question was phrased by the source as follows: "Q1. Taking all things
together, would you say you are: Very happy, rather happy, not very happy, not happy at all". Percentages represent the combined share of 'very happy' and 'rather happy' respondents.
** The global average is based on surveys of 20,327 adults in 28 countries (samples of 1000+ or 500+ per country). The number of respondents in Hungary, Poland, Russia, Turkey and Serbia were all over 500.
Surveys in Hungary and Poland can be taken as representative of the general adult population under 75 years of age. The online samples for Russia, Serbia and Turkey were more urban, more educated and/or more affluent than the general population and the results should be viewed as reflecting the views of a more "connected" population.
Data for Serbia not available between December 2011 and March 2017.
