Medical homes who function with allowance payments in Belgium 2018, by region

In Belgium, medical homes offer access to a variety of health providers. These structures aim at providing health care regardless of social inequities. Most primary care acts are directly financed by the patient and his insurance. However, an allowance system exists since 1982 in Belgium. In 2018, 177 medical homes function with this allowance system.

Brussels had the most medical homes with this type of payment in its region. Wallonia had 65 homes functioning by allowances, making it second. In 2018, these types of homes were rarer in Flanders.

Under the allowance system, the patient's insurance bears the costs of his consultations. The patient does not pay upfront to the medical home. In return, the patient is assigned to one medical home. Meaning he does not get a refund when he consults a professional outside of it.
