¹Traditional Japanese entertainment includes kabuki, noh, bunraku, koto, shamisen, shakuhachi, and other traditional court music, as well as Buddhistic recitations.
²Traditional Japanese music includes naga-uta (folk ballads accompanied by the shamisen), sōkyoku (both modern and pre-modern koto music), gidayu (recitational singing that accompanies bunraku puppet theater), taiko drums, etc.
³Historic culture includes historic architecture, landscapes, and similar cultural assets
Visual arts includes paintings, drawings, sculptures, crafts, ceramics, calligraphy, photography, design, architecture, fashion design, digital art, etc.
Living culture includes tea ceremony, flower arrangements, calligraphy, Japanese board games like go and shogi, etc. (excluding food culture)
Literature includes novels, poems, tanka, haiku, etc.
Modern music includes pop, rock, jazz, folk, and enka (a Japanese chanson-like genre with a distinct vibrato singing style), etc.
Restoration and preservation technology includes repairing and restoration techniques, and material production necessary to preserve cultural assets (reed thatching/roofing, dyeing and weaving, handmade Japanese paper, musical instrument making, etc.)
Folkloric cultural assets include regional festivals and other year-round events
¹⁰Entertainment performances includes several types of Japanese comedy acts (such as rakugo and manzai), magic tricks, street performances, and other physical artistry.
¹¹Classical music includes orchestras, chamber music, opera, choirs, and brass bands, etc.
¹²Foreign dances includes street dances (like break dance and hip hop), jazz dance, folkloric dances (such as hula, flamenco, salsa), and social dances.
