GHG emissions from the waste sector in the U.S. 2011-2021
The U.S. waste sector reported greenhouse gas emissions of 103.3 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e) across 1,460 facilities in 2021. Municipal landfills accounted for more than 80 percent of these emissions. Emissions from facilities in the U.S. waste sector have been on a downward trajectory over the past decade.
