Italy: leading banks by number of current accounts 2018

Intesa Sanpaolo is the leading bank in Italy in terms of number of current accounts. In fact, the number of current accounts at Italy's largest bank reached approximately 10.5 million as of June 2018. Second in the ranking was UniCredit, with approximately 7.6 million current accounts. Far behind, in third place, came bank Banco BPM with almost three million.
Intesa Sanpaolo also leads the ranking of the leading banks in terms of current accounts' value in Italy.

In 2017, Intesa Sanpaolo incorporated two banks: Banco Popolare di Vicenza and Venetobanca, hence the significant increase in current accounts.
On 10 May 2017, UBI Banca acquired Nuova Banca delle Marche, Nuova Banca dell'Etruria e del Lazio and Nuova Cassa di Risparmio di Chieti, which were merged into UBI Banca.
