Infant mortality in Algeria 1955-2020
The infant mortality rate (for children younger than one year old) in Algeria decreased from over 160 deaths per thousand births in 1955, to just 21 deaths per thousand births in 2020. The period with the fastest decline came in the 1980s, when it dropped from in just five years. This corresponds with greater access and advancements to medical care (particularly vaccination), as well as general increases in living standards. Compared to Algeria's child mortality rate (for children under the age of five years old), infant mortality made up 58 percent of all child deaths in 1955, whereas it made up 84 percent in 2020. Again, this is due to improved access to medical care and education over the corresponding 65 year period shown here.
