Size of forested area temporary released for mining Indonesia 2014-2018
In 2018, almost 100 thousand hectares of forest were authorized by the government to be temporarily used for mining activities. Until 2018, the Indonesian government had authorized about 0.5 million hectares of forest for this purpose. Indonesia has had one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world, with more than 74 million hectares of rainforest burned or degraded in the last 50 years.
