The graph shows the number of PDO labeled products per French department. The survey counts both processed food PDOs such as dairy products, olive oil or meat products; appellations for wines and PDOs for spirits.
Two French departments have a significantly higher number of PDO products than other French regions in 2022, Côte-D'Or and Saône-Et-Loire. These two departments have a large number of PDO-labeled vineyards in one of France's most emblematic wine-growing regions: Burgundy.
As the agricultural sector accounts for a large share of these countries' exports, the need to protect local know-how and their image abroad partly explains the success of food appellations in Mediterranean countries.

PDO, a label for export promotion
Latin European countries are the most protective of the origins of their food products. However, despite the very large number of labeled products in France, the hexagon is losing competitiveness, especially within the European Union, with which the trade balance has only fallen since 2011.France now faces many countries such as the Netherlands with whom agri-food trade is largely to the disadvantage of the French economy.
