As of June 2022, 22 percent of female adults indicated that they have received an unexpected medical bill after receiving medical care. From January 1, 2022, the No Surprises Act (NSA) went into effect, it protects patients from surprise medical bills under certain circumstances, making it illegal for out-of-network providers to charge patients more than the in-network cost-sharing price.
