The total estimated economic loss caused by piracy in Poland in 2016 was close to four billion zloty. Around three billion zloty were lost in GDP value and 835.8 million zloty in tax value.

Methodology included a quantitative survey (CAWI, N=1,500, 15-75 years old, respondents who use the internet to access video, live streaming, books, audiobooks, music, and press), individual interviews, literature analysis, economic and econometric models, and the critical analysis of a panel of experts.

* The source explains the calculation method: To calculate the total loss caused by internet piracy, the analysis of two streams was used. The first stream has to do with payments made by users on pirating services in order to gain access to content. Because most of these services are registered abroad, financial leakage effects occur. If performed legally, these payments would have strengthened particular branches of the Polish economy. The second stream has to do with the potential demand for goods in the creative industry that could have been generated in the absence of access to illegal online sources.
