Quarterly ROA of U.S. banking industry 2003-2022
The return on assets of the United States commercial banking industry increased in the third quarter of 2022, albeit slightly when compared to the previous quarter. The trend in 2022 was similar to the past when between 2003 and 2007, the ROA remained relatively stable, but started a sharp incline in 2007 due to the financial crisis. The ROA of the U.S. banking industry hit a record low value of negative 1.86 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018. After that, it continued to rise, although with fluctuations. After the first quarter of 2021, the ROA of the U.S. banking industry stared to decrease again.
