Case development trend
Mid of February, novel coronavirus (COVID-19) began to increase exponentially from patient 31, who was known as a super propagator. With a quick response by the government, the daily new cases once dropped to a single-digit. Recently, COVID-19 is spreading in various places such as entertainment spots, religious facilities, and logistics companies in Seoul and its neighboring areas with high population density and high mobility. 274 new infections were related to cluster infections that occurred in some clubs at Itaewon, an entertainment district in Seoul. This Itaewon infection has also affected South Korean e-commerce platforms. Quite some new mass infections emerged at the distribution centers of Coupang and Market Curly, which are the leading e-commerce platforms famous for rocket shipping and fresh food delivery.
Economic impact on Korean economy
The Korean economy is interdependent on many countries over the world, so the impact of coronavirus on Korean economy is significant. According to the recent OECD forecasts, South Korea's GDP growth shows a 0.3% decline from the 2.3% expected during last year. The first sector the Coronavirus impacted was tourism, caused by decreasing number of inbound tourists and domestic sales. In the first quarter of this year, tourism revenue was expected to decrease by 2.9 trillion won. In addition, Korean companies predict that the damage caused by the losses in sales and exports this year will be significant. In particular, the Korean automotive industry, which is closely related to China, is considered to be the industry most affected by the coronavirus as automobile production and parts supply stopped at factories in China.
