In 2022, the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in India reported the highest number of offenses related to ransomware, with over 600 cases registered with the authorities. Overall, the country recorded 957 cases of ransomware offenses that year. This category of cyber crime came under the purview of Section 66 of the Indian Penal Code.
