Decarbonization investment breakdown of the international shipping industry 2050
The investments needed to fully decarbonize the shipping industry by 2050 can be broken down into two major types: ship-related and land-based investments. Land-based investments refer to all the processes needed to produce, store, and distribute ammonia (NH3) and its precursor, hydrogen. Thanks to its high competitiveness, ammonia is assumed to be the future clean fuel of choice in the shipping industry. About 90 percent of the investments are thus assumed to be land-based, while only 13 percent are related to ships. The estimated aggregate costs for decarbonisation by 2050 amount to 1.65 trillion U.S. dollars.
