The 5,000 meter was introduced to the men's Olympic roster in 1912, while the women's event did not make its debut until 1996, where it replaced the 3,000m race. Vivian Cheriyot set the Olympic record with her win in 2016, while Ethiopia's Letesenbet Gidey set the women's world record of 14 minutes, 6.62 seconds in 2020. In the men's event, Kenenisa Bekele set the Olympic record with his victory in 2008, while gold medallist at the Tokyo Games, Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei, set the world record of 12 minutes, 35.36 seconds in 2020.
This data was collected using the official Olympic.org site, as well as a spreadsheet from the Guardian that includes data from 1896-2008 (available here), 2012 and 2016 data was compared with that from Encyclopaedia Britannica, and several news outlets were used to update the table when medals were reassigned (i.e. for doping offenses).
