In 2022, Waste Management, Inc. managed roughly 30 percent of the landfill volume in the United States. Republic Services managed the second-largest landfill volume that year, at 19 percent. Waste Management and Republic Services are the leading U.S. waste management companies based on revenue.

Waste Management, Inc’s landfill operations

The number of solid waste landfills operated by Waste Management, Inc. stood at 254 in the 2022 financial year. Approximately 123 million tons of waste were managed across these sites. Waste Management completed the 4.6 billion U.S. dollar acquisition of Advanced Disposal in October 2020, acquiring additional landfills, transfer stations, and collection routes in the process.

Landfill waste disposal in the U.S.

In 2018, the U.S. sent 146 million metric tons of municipal solid waste to landfills. This accounted for 50 percent of U.S. MSW disposal, making it the main waste disposal method in the country by far. The second most common waste treatment method is recycling.
