Leading public companies' game revenue APAC Q4 2019

Chinese conglomerate Tencent Holdings Ltd dominated the ranking for leading public companies in terms of game revenue in the fourth quarter of 2019 in the Asia Pacific region. Tencent had a game revenue of over 7.29 billion U.S. dollars. Following in second was Sony, with a revenue of more than a staggering 3.77 billion U.S. dollars from games alone. Other Asia Pacific-based companies which boasted high game revenues included the likes of Apple, Microsoft, and Nintendo.

Leading companies

Tencent reigns as a leader in the gaming market. With an impressive employee count of more than 50,000, the company demonstrated that gaming revenue was at an all time high in financial year 2018. Although Tencent is active in many fields of technology, the majority of its revenue comes from its gaming sector. Other notorious Asia Pacific companies in the gaming industry are Sony and Nintendo. Starting off as a playing cards company in the late 19th century, Nintendo grew to be one of Japan’s most profitable companies. The video game giant announced monumental sales growth of its Nintendo Switch in 2019.

Evolution of gaming

Gaming is fast becoming a culture across the globe; however, it especially stands as a prominent force in the Asia Pacific region. Income from gaming in Asia Pacific has surged throughout recent years. It can be inferred that the increased possibility of mobile payments and online transactions across the region have impacted gaming positively, as consumers have the opportunity to spend money while gaming. The rise of eSports and professional gaming has also helped to project the gaming industry further. Interestingly, some professional players can earn up to hundreds of thousands of dollars per gaming tournament. Nevertheless, the present and future focus of gaming in the Asia Pacific region appears to lie with increased levels of user experience. Virtual reality is making a powerful entrance into the Asia Pacific gaming sector, with the Asia Pacific virtual reality market forecasted to almost triple in worth from 2020 to 2022.
