Total number of U.S. coronavirus (COVID-19) cases and deaths as of April 2, 2020

As of April 2, 2020, the number of both confirmed and presumptive positive cases of the COVID-19 disease reported in the United States had reached 213,144, with 4,513 deaths reported among these cases. This data does not include persons repatriated to the United States from international locations.

Cases in the United States

The novel coronavirus COVID-19 has been reported in around 203 countries worldwide. In the United States, the first cases were detected in travelers to the country; person-to-person spread was subsequently reported among close contacts of returned travelers. However, some parts of the United States are now reporting community transmission, meaning that human infection is spreading without a chain of transmission, i.e., it is not known how or where patients became exposed.

Where has this coronavirus come from?

Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses transmitted between animals and people that cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases. The novel coronavirus that is currently infecting humans was already circulating among certain animal species. The first human case of this new coronavirus strain was reported in China at the end of December 2019. The coronavirus was named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and its associated disease is known as COVID-19.

Supplementary notes

* Data include both confirmed and presumptive positive cases of COVID-19 reported to CDC or tested at CDC since January 21, 2020, with the exception of testing results for persons repatriated to the United States from Wuhan, China and Japan. State and local public health departments are now testing and publicly reporting their cases. In the event of a discrepancy between CDC cases and cases reported by state and local public health officials, data reported by states should be considered the most up to date.
