On January 31, 2020, the first two cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United Kingdom (UK) were confirmed in a facility Newcastle upon Tyne in the Northeast of England, after two members of the same family became unwell in York. The number of cases in the UK increased significantly at the beginning of March and again in September. On October 25, the number of confirmed cases in the UK amounted to 883,800.

Current infection rate in Europe

The current infection rate in the UK is 228 cases per 100,000 population in the last seven days as of October 26. Czechia has had 784 cases per 100,000 in the last week, which is one of the highest rates in Europe. Since August 29, the UK has required travelers returning from Czechia to be quarantined for two weeks. It was announced on August 13 that the UK was also removing France and Belgium from its quarantine exemption list, sparking a rush of tourists to cut short their holidays and return to the UK before the exemption window closed on the morning of August 15. Spain has been removed from the UK's exemption list since July 28, with the country now recording a seven-day rate of 233 per 100,000.
