Cumulative cases of COVID-19 worldwide from January 22 to December 3, 2020, by day

As of December 3, 2020, there have been around 65 million cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) worldwide. The disease has impacted more than 210 countries and territories, with the United States confirming around one-fifth of all global cases.

COVID-19: An unprecedented crisis

Countries around the world are facing unbearable health and social emergencies, but the steep rise in the number of global coronavirus cases is showing no signs of flattening. Health systems have been overwhelmed, and even the richest and most prepared countries have struggled. In the most vulnerable countries, millions of people do not have access to critical life-saving supplies, such as test kits, face masks, and respirators. As countries start to ease confinement measures – vital to stimulating economies – effective testing systems must be in place to detect new clusters of cases and avoid costly lockdowns in the future.

The coronavirus in the United Kingdom

Around 60,100 people have died from COVID-19 in the UK, which is the highest number in Europe. The tireless work of the National Health Service (NHS) has been applauded, but the country’s response to the crisis has drawn criticism. The UK was slow to start widespread testing and was also forced to abandon plans for a COVID-19 contact tracing app. As lockdown measures in the country are gradually relaxed, one of the biggest threats is complacency. To help prevent a second wave of new coronavirus infections, governments in Scotland and England have made it mandatory to wear face coverings in shops and when using public transport.
