COVID-19 cases, recoveries, deaths among most impacted countries as of May 29, 2020

As of May 29, 2020, the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) had been confirmed in around 210 countries and territories around the world. There had been over 5.9 million cases and around 362,000 deaths.

Drug trials are underway in the U.S.

With over 1.7 million cases, the United States has emerged as the new epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the battle against the virus, several experimental drugs are being tested in the country. A study enrolling healthy adult volunteers in Seattle is testing the efficacy of the investigational vaccine mRNA-1273, which is being developed by Moderna Therapeutics. Clinical trials are also underway at the University of Nebraska Medical Center to evaluate the safety of the antiviral remdesivir. However, despite the progress, there are no vaccines or specific treatments for COVID-19.

The difference between vaccines and antivirals

Medications can help with the symptoms of viruses, but it is the role of the immune system to take care of them over time. However, the use of vaccines and antivirals can help the immune system in doing its job. The most tried and tested vaccine method is to inject an inactive or weakened form of a virus, encouraging the immune system to produce protective antibodies. The immune system keeps the virus in its memory, and if the real one appears, the body will recognize it and attack it more efficiently. Antivirals are designed to help target viruses, limiting their ability to reproduce and spread to other cells. They are used by patients that are already infected by a virus and can make the infection less severe.
