Share of individuals consuming gluten-free products in Italy 2020, by age group

An Italian survey from 2020 showed that gluten-free products were liked mostly by 45-to-54-year-olds. 26 percent of them stated they sometimes consumed gluten-free foods, while six percent used to do it often. Individuals between 18 and 34 years reported lower percentages: 21 percent consumed gluten-free products sometimes, while five percent did the same more regularly. Either for intolerances to gluten or because of own preferences, gluten-free foods were preferred slightly more by women than by men.

A significant consumer base

The preference for gluten-free foods was revealed already by a survey from 2019. 10 percent of Italian respondents were willing to spend more in gluten- and lactose-free foods, while 43 percent of respondents intended to spend the same on such products compared to the previous year. The interest for the nutritional trend reducing the intake of gluten in the diet was more significant than the share of population reporting an actual intolerance to gluten. In fact, a 2019 survey indicated that this intolerance affected only five percent of the population.

The world of gluten-free bakery

The bakery industry managed to avoid gluten keeping a varied offer of products. The sales value of gluten-free bakery products increased from 11.5 million euros in the first semester 2018 to 13.5 million euros in the same period of 2019. In particular, bread crisps reported the highest sales value with 106 million euros as of the first semester 2019.
