Naphtha production volume India FY 2013-2020
India witnessed a steady increase in the production volume of naphtha from the financial year 2015 and it reached 20.6 million metric tons in financial year 2020. Naphtha was majorly used as a feedstock for chemical and petrochemical industries for the production of urea, aromatics, ethylene, and propylene.
There was an increasing demand from the petrochemical industry over the observed time frame. In financial year 2018, around 83 percent of the demand for naphtha came from the petrochemical industry. As the demand for ethylene and propylene were about to increase, correspondingly the demand for naphtha was also about to increase in the coming years.
However, India imported petrochemical grade naphtha, as the one it produced was not suitable for that purpose and could only be used as a fuel by industries for power generation.
