Total assets of banks Europe 2018, by country

This statistic shows the twenty largest banking sectors in terms of total assets in Europe in 2018, by country. Countries listed include EU-28 countries, EFTA member states and EBF associate members. In 2018, the total value of assets in banks in the United Kingdom (UK) came to over nine trillion euros. The total value of assets in EU-28 countries increased by approximately half a trillion euros in 2018 as compared to 2017.

Europe’s largest banks

As of the end of 2019, the largest bank in Europe was the London headquartered bank HSBC Holding Plc with total assets valued at over 2.4 trillion euros. The largest European banks are situated mainly across the UK, France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands.

Monetary financial institutions (MFIs)

The definition of MFIs according to the European Central Bank (ECB) is "resident credit institutions as defined in European Union (EU) law, and other resident financial institutions whose business is to receive deposits and/or close substitutes for deposits from entities other than MFIs and, for their own account (at least in economic terms), to grant credits and/or make investments in securities." MFI’s in Europe are made up of credit institutions, money market funds, Central banks and other financial institutions. As of March 2020, there were more than six thousand monetary financial institutions (MFIs) operating across the 28 countries of the European Union (EU28), of which the majority were credit institutions (banks).
