Composition of British banking sector assets

As of December 2020, over half of the total assets of banks in Great Britain (GB) were made up of loans and advances to retail and commercial customers. GB banks put less weight on loans and advances to customers than the Europe wide average. In terms of total assets, the United Kingdom has the second largest banking sector in Europe.

The source added the following information "This risk dashboard is based on a sample of Risk Indicators (RI) from 182 European banks(unconsolidated number of banks, including 35 subsidiaries). The sample of banks is reviewed annually by competent authorities and adjusted accordingly. This can determine breaks in the time series. Ratios provided in the text are weighted average if not otherwise stated. The data is based on the EBA’s implementing technical standards (ITS) on supervisory reporting (EURegulationNo680/2014 and it subsequent amendments). In the chart on Risk Indicators by size class, considering the distribution of the average total assets, the small banks are those below the first quartile, the large banks are those above the third quartile. Underlying data in this risk dashboard has been compiled by the EBA since 2014 and it has served as basis for additional analyses included in EBA's Risk Assessment Report, last version published in November 2019."
