As of June 2018, intensive care units (ICU) in hospitals in Tokyo Prefecture had a capacity of 848 hospital beds,
which was the highest number among all 47 prefectures in Japan. Osaka Prefecture followed with 513 beds. That year, a total of around 5.9 thousand beds were available in ICUs in Japanese hospitals.
