Belgium: anxiety disorder by region

From a regional perspective, the prevalence of generalized anxiety disorders in Belgium varied greatly in 2018. Indeed, with a population share of 8,6 percent, Flanders recorded the lowest prevalence of general anxiety disorder and was notably below the country's average of 11,2 percent. On the other hand, Wallonia registered the highest prevalence for such a condition. Nonetheless, as an error margin is inevitable for any scale that measures psychological issues, these figures can only provide a picture of mental health in Belgium.

The sampling of 7786 respondents was made online and not controlled scientifically. However, a logistic regression model based on age, gender, and the yearly population, was used to evaluate the prevalence of mental disorders in the entire Belgian population.

The scale used to measure anxiety disorders was the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7). As any scale evaluating psychological problems, a margin of error is to be considered. The presented share of the population with a generalized anxiety disorder in Belgium is to be considered as a general picture of the situation across the country.
