Mexico: reasons for buying online during the COVID-19 pandemic 2020

A survey carried out in April 2020 revealed that the main reason for buying online among digital shoppers in Mexico was the need to stay home. More than half of respondents (55 percent) said they had bought online since the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak because they did not want to go out. Another 48 percent of the online buyers surveyed stated that they had purchased online to avoid crowds in physical stores. Other reasons quoted were related to the higher availability of special offers and discounts online as well as the need of delivery to the buyers' households.

E-commerce goes viral

The COVID-19 outbreak boosted e-commerce in Latin America altogether: online sales revenue increased by 230 percent in the region and skyrocketed by 900 percent in Mexico alone. Furthermore, nearly four out of five consumers in overall Latin America intended to continue shopping online even after the pandemic was over.

More groceries & laundry items

In Mexico, the coronavirus’ impact on e-commerce has been observed in specific categories. The average number of unique visitors of online grocery stores in the North American country rose by approximately 15 percent, to 1.5 million. The largest online marketplace in Latin America, Mercado Libre, noticed an increase of over 400 percent in sales of home care and laundry products.
