In France in 2019, the top 100 e-commerce websites were classified according to their CO2 emissions in grams of CO2 equivalent (gCO2e). Most of the e-commerce websites had an impact of less than 2g CO2e during an average visit. Only one out of the 100 e-commerce sites had an impact higher than 10g CO2e.

"The measurements were carried out on the basis of a standardized protocol: On the mobile device, an actual measurement on a mid-range Android smartphone equipped with a Chrome browser was launched 3 times and averaged before being projected with a Carbon impact factor, taking into account the following settings: WiFi mix - GPS network , brightness 50%, wear and tear on the phone battery at 500 full charge / discharge cycles.
On the Datacenter and Network side, the Carbon Impact from the consumption of data exchanged with the device was projected using the OneByte Method by the ShiftProject.".

In order to compare e-commerce sites with each other, an average of 5 min and 28 sec on an e-commerce website via smartphone which has a carbon impact of 2 grams CO2 equivalent, was used as the element of reference. The factor of possibles changes in visiting times (3 to 15 minutes) has been taken into account.
