Like most supermarket products, alcoholic drinks sales increased siginificantly in March and April 2020 due to the coronavirus outbreak. In addition, the source mentioned that consumers not only bought more, but also more expensive alcoholic drinks to compensate for losing the experience of going out to a restaurant or bar. Restaurants and bars were forced to close in the Netherlands due to social distancing rules.
In the period mid-March to mid-April 2020, the turnover of alcoholic drinks retail has increased with roughly eight percent compared to the same period the year before, resulting in a value of almost 320 million euros. The lion's share of the gross revenue was accounted for by beer and wine sales, with approximately 131 and 123 million euros respectively.
