Number of foreign trainee employer inspections Japan 2021, by major industry
More than 2.8 thousand businesses in Japan dealing with machinery and metals were inspected due to suspected labor standard violations regarding the employment of foreign technical intern trainees in 2021. Inspections were also common in the construction industry, with more than 1.5 thousand cases during that year. Both the number of inspected companies and the number of companies found to be guilty of violations steadily increased since 2013, with 2019 recording an exceptional spike within the general upward trend of the past decade. While some companies came under scrutiny due to past violations, others were inspected because of tipoffs from workers.
