River cruise calls at the Port of Amsterdam in the Netherlands 2009-2020
Between the period of 2009 to 2018, the number of river cruise arrivals at the Port of Amsterdam increased steadily. In 2009, 999 river cruises were counted arriving in the Port of Amsterdam, whereas by 2018 this increased to just over 2,000 calls. However, in 2019 the number of arrivals decreased slightly and approximately 1,900 river cruises were registered at the port.
The year 2020 was especially unfortunate for the cruise industry. The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in the Port of Amsterdam being closed to river cruises for most of the year. Later in 2020, river cruises were allowed to return to the port but their number remained severely limited, amounting to 132 river cruises.
