Women prosecuted for abortion by province Ecuador

From 2014 to 2018, Pichincha was the province in Ecuador where the highest number of voluntary abortion cases ended up in trial. Out of a total 135 abortion trials registered nationally in that period, 23 were reported in Pichincha. This province was followed by Guayas, with 15 abortion trials. In Ecuador, abortion is only legal in two cases: when a pregnant woman's life is at risk (provided all other alternatives have been exhausted) or if the pregnancy is the result of rape suffered by a woman with a mental disability.
