The number of trainees that were part of the foreign technical intern training program in Japan amounted to approximately 343.25 thousand as of October 2022. While the program's official intention is to enable a knowledge transfer to workers from other countries, it has often been criticized for its harsh working conditions and lack of securing workers' rights. Despite the ongoing criticism, however, the number of trainees almost tripled within the surveyed period.
