
Brazil: out-of-home food household spending share 2018, by area
The percentage of food expenditure destined to out-of-home food by Brazilian households increased 1.7 percentage points within a decade, according to a national survey. In 2008 and 2009, Brazilian households spent an average of 31.1 percent of their total monthly food expenses on food away from home. In 2017 and 2018, this share went up to 32.8 percent. This growth was particularly noticeable in rural areas, where out-of-home food spending went from 17.5 percent in the period 2008-2009 to 24 percent in 2017-2018, an increase of 6.5 percentage points.
